MASSIVE RE-PLUMBING JOB TO MY APT BUILDING
TUESDAY, AUGUST 14 - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2012
ESTIMATED COST: $100,000 UH-OH...RENT INCREASE COMING? SHIT...
OVER 50 YEARS OF STEADY EROSION BY VANCOUVER'S SLIGHTLY ACIDIC WATER HAS TAKEN ITS TOLL.
THE COPPER PIPE WAS FAILING EVERYWHERE AS IT GOT NEAR PAPER THIN WITH SMALL HOLES SUDDENLY APPEARING IN THE PIPE. FAST FLOWING LEAKS WOULD FREQUENTLY CAUSE MINOR FLOODING IN THE WALLS OF APARTMENTS AND OUTSIDE HALLWAYS.
IT WOULD ONLY BE A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE A CATASTROPHIC PIPE FAILURE WOULD CAUSE A MAJOR PROBLEM.
A TOTAL BUILDING WATER PIPE REPLACEMENT JOB WAS THE ONLY OPTION.
NEW WHITE PLASTIC PIPE HAS REPLACED ALL THE COPPER PIPE WHICH WILL BE LEFT IN PLACE.
SO THIS MEANS THAT BIG HOLES ARE CUT IN ALL THE SUITES TO ENABLE THE NEW PIPE TO BE PLACED IN THE WALLS. UNTIL THE PIPE IS INSTALLED, BLACK PLASTIC SHEETING COVERS THE HOLES IN THE WALLS.
MAIN FLOOR HALLWAY:
Boxes of pipe insulation
SO WHAT DOES OUR DUMB-ASS BLDG MANAGER DO?
GO ON VACATION!

08:27 - They have not finished cutting my place up yet! A couple of unexpected knocks on the door and I have to leave in the middle of breakfast as Uberleutnant Hans von Cutter under the command of Commandant Colonel Otto Kranz comes trooping into my apartment with his stuff. He has to do the hallway closet and hallway wall near the smoke detector.
I survey the damage:

The kitchen is refitted with plastic pipe.
Notice the lovely fibre glass there...Christ! We should be put up at a hotel while they do this stuff! No way, with that cheap-ass landlord we got...

Now its the bathroom's turn...Holy Fuckin Shit! Looks like a movie set for the Syrian Army!!

Finally the dry waller tears down the plastic sheeting and installs wallboard over the cuts. He had to put in steel rails around the cut and then measure out the size of the cut for the wallboard. Then he cut and screwed the wallboard pieces onto the steel rails.
Hopefully tomorrow the 'mudder' will come by and smooth over the rough edges; with some stuff resembling poly filla, then sand it down; smooth it over some more with more mud then sand it again so that it is flush with the wall and ready for the painters.
But we wont be finished yet! Commandant Kranz is talking it over with the tiler whether or not to do the whole tile wall around the bathtub or just the tiles that were pulled out for the pipe. Hope to hell its just the tiles that were removed for the pipe.
Thats my toilet tank in the bathtub in one of those photos. He had to remove it to get at the wall behind the toilet.

Looks like we are in the home stretch now!! Yaaaaaa.....can hardly wait.

Finally the mudder shows up after I hear them bonking about in apts 106; 107; and 108 and vacuuming since 0845. Yep. Looks like I am the last one to get things done around here. He starts with the hallway closet after laying down a clear plastic sheet on the rug.
The mudder works quickly. He has done the hall closet; the cut next to the fuse box and kitchen and is now in the bathroom. Yeah. All he has to do is smear the mud around the edges of the cut to even it out with the rest of the wall. He takes a little longer in the bathroom since he has to remove the toilet tank and put it back on.
He cleans up the counter and looks like he is finished. I ask him about it and he says he lets it dry for a day before applying a second application of it tomorrow. He says it takes longer to dry because there is no heat in the bldg. So maybe thats why Peter turned the heat on Friday 9-14. To dry the mud and then off the heat went again on Tuesday 9-18. Yeah, thought the bastard was being too nice about it like considering us tenants for once. God. Watta skinflint mizer of a landlord we got.

The tiler show up ready to get to work on the bathtub tiles starting with installing new wall board to attach the new tiles to.
He is finally finished cutting; gluing; grouting; and applying silicone sealant to the tiles where they meet the bathtub. I think I can safely say that FINALLY! They appear to be finished with my suite with just a bit of moulding behind the toilet to apply and then, that is it!
