Haida Gwaii 7.7 magnitude earthquake Saturday, October 27, 2012 about 2000 hours PDT.
This quake was caused by a sudden mostly lateral thrust of the Pacific Plate at a depth of 17 kilometres.
The lateral or sideways motion of the plate caused minimal vertical oscillations in the crust resulting in minimal collateral damage.
The quake occurred in a fault system which is distinctly separate from the fault systems to the south which include the San Andreas and Juan de Fuca faults.
